BiographyOlga Tararova (PhD, University of Toronto, Canada) is an Assistant Professor at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, where she teaches courses both at the graduate and undergraduate level. Her research interests include language teaching and methodology, bilingualism, second and third language acquisition, heritage languages, and language variation and change.
During her Masters and PhD, she worked with a heritage Italian community in Chipilo, Mexico, that has preserved their language for over 130 years. Her immersive work during her studies have allowed her to gain extensive knowledge regarding heritage languages, issues concerning language maintenance and loss, and grammar of heritage speakers. For her, teaching is not simply a job; it is what completes her as an individual. Focusing on languages in contact and interaction between different language groups in her dissertation, in addition to completing courses on language acquisition and pedagogical applications has helped her share her knowledge with students. In each of her courses, she strives to emphasize the importance of one's learning path, the significance of extralinguistic factors, such as motivation and positive attitudes, and the idea of language as part of the human culture. One of her core values in the classroom deal with the role of the professor. She believes that an instructor should serve as both a facilitator and a guide to students during their learning journey, as a way of encompassing their ultimate goal of becoming self-sufficient masters of their chosen educational path. Her goals include imparting knowledge, inspiring students by provoking their curiosity to learn about language and its components beyond the classroom setting. She is committed to helping each individual reach their own potential in learning new material by fostering to a positive, enjoyable experience.
